What is a Magnet?
Magnet Programs are Court-Ordered voluntary integration opportunities available to students in grades K-12 living within LAUSD. Currently there are 225 Magnet programs located throughout LAUSD.

What is the difference between Magnet and Gifted?
The Magnet Program is a Court-Ordered voluntary integration program open to all LAUSD students.

47 of the 225 Magnet programs available are Gifted/High-Ability or Highly Gifted programs. In order to apply to one of these 47 programs, students must first meet the eligibility criteria.

Wilmington Middle School STEAM Magnet continues to offer programs supporting students with disabilities, English Learners, and gifted students.

What is a Magnet theme?
Every magnet has a theme (ours is STEAM). Some other themes are:
  • Business
  • Communication Arts
  • Public Service
  • Visual/Performing Arts
How are students selected to be in a Magnet program?
Students are selected based on the magnet program goal and are randomly accepted into Magnet programs based on the number of priority points they accrue. Any student who sent in an on-time application, but was not selected, is placed on a waiting list at the school.

Wilmington Middle School STEAM Magnet is a continuous enrollment Magnet, which means that it still serves as a school of residence for students residing within its boundaries.

How are priority points assigned?
  • Points are assigned as follow:
  • Matriculation (12 pts.)
  • Waiting List (4-12 pts.)
  • PHBAO (4 pts.)
  • Overcrowded (4 pts.)
  • Sibling (3 pts.)
