History

Wilmington Middle School STEAM Magnet is a school-wide continuous enrollment school serving students in grades 6 through 8.  On April 12, 2016, the LAUSD Board of Education approved the conversion of Wilmington Middle School, beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, into a school-wide Magnet with the theme of STEAM:  Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.

Wilmington Middle School became a school-wide Magnet program to address several pressing community needs.  Among these were the need to address the 5 harms of racial isolation identified in the LAUSD Plan for Desegregation, the fact that Wilmington did not have a middle school Magnet program, which resulted in many students leaving the community to take advantage of the opportunities offered by a Magnet school, and the advantage to the students of Wilmington from having a Magnet “pipeline” from elementary to middle school and high school.  Additionally, it was determined that given the school’s location in the heart of the Harbor in South Los Angeles, the premier US gateway for international trade and commerce, it was critical that students have access to the educational opportunities that will prepare them for careers in the STEAM-related fields.
